Burford Information and History
Did you know that Burford is home to the oldest pharmacy in England?
It is believed that Nicholas Willet leased premises at 124 High Street in Burford as an aopthecary on 16th July 1724. A pharmacy has continued trading there (under several ownerships) since and the current store is known as Reavley's.
Prior to Willet's lease the building had been the Crown Inn for over 300 years.
The Reavley's dispensing chemist started in 1918 when Robert Reavley (died in 1955), a pharmacist from Jarrow in Northumberland, bought it from Edwin Ballard and today Cedric proudly continues the family business.
